The TKT Test

Who is the course aimed at?

Knowledge is just one of the things a teacher needs to take into the classroom - but it's a vitally important one

The course is aimed at teachers preparing to take the Cambridge ESOL TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test).

It is intended for teachers with some practical experience but who may not have a formal qualification in teaching English. The course is also suitable for teachers returning to teaching after a break, and wishing to brush up on their knowledge.

The course and exam are suitable for native and non-native speakers.

Who is TKT for?

TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in the English language teaching classroom. It is ideal for all teachers, whatever their background and teaching experience, and is also suitable for people who would like to teach English but do not yet have a teaching position.

There are no formal entry requirements. However, anyone wishing to take TKT is strongly advised to have at least an intermediate level of English — Level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) — e.g. PET, IELTS band score of 4.

Aims of the course

The course is designed to prepare teachers to successfully pass the TKT

It is also intended to enable teachers to broaden their understanding of the teaching/learning process

The course provides the opportunity to extend their skills in specific areas and to build up their own portfolio of lesson plans and teaching materials.

Course content

The LTTC  TKT course is designed around the three modules of the exam. A module represents approximately 20 hours work.

Upon enrolment of the course, you will be sent:

  • The TKT coursebook
  • Teaching IELTS course
  • Teaching Vocabulary course
  • Teaching Pronunciation course
  • Teaching One to One course
  • Language Awareness course

Includes  personal one to one tutorial support.

Teachers will also have access to Teachitworld which is a large resource bank of lesson materials  They will be able to use this to build up a valuable portfolio of lesson plans and materials at all levels.

As you work your way through the course book and supplementary materials your personal tutor will patiently provide guidance and feedback so that you will gain the knowledge and confidence to pass the exam

How it works

Step one: When you enrol on the course you are sent the following:

  • The Cambridge TKT Course book. This is ordered from a bookshop and sent through the post. This is the main text for the course and your personal tutor will set reading and tasks based on this book
  • You will be sent the following short courses electronically

Teaching IELTS course

Teaching Vocabulary course

Teaching Pronunciation course

Teaching One to One course

Language Awareness course

These are LTTC short courses which will supplement your knowledge for the TKT test. You have the option of submitting extra assignments based on these courses individually to gain a separate qualification for each course. A soft copy of the certificate for these qualifications will be awarded free of charge. A charge of £12 will be made if you would like a hard copy certificate sent through the post.

Step Two: Your tutor will set you a practice test/s for each module and give you feedback and grading.

Step Three: When you and your tutor agree that you are ready, you can register to sit the examination at your nearest centre.
